4TH ANNUAL "HUNT FOR HUNGER” NEAR EMPORIA JAN. 7-9

Event designed to feed those in need, raise funds for college scholarship

EMPORIA — On Jan. 7-9, a group of Emporia hunters will conduct the 4th Annual Hunt For Hunger, a charitable competition to help those in need. The event headquarters will be at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building in Emporia.

Participants will hunt and trap in two-person teams for two days, and scores will be awarded based on game and fur bagged. All licenses, permits, rules, and regulations of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks apply. Cleaning stations will be provided to clean game and furs, and judges will evaluate quality and care of meat. No frozen game or furs will be accepted.

Winning teams and all those who participate in the fundraiser will be recognized and treated to the hunter's banquet where prizes and gift certificates will be awarded after scoring on Jan. 9.

The four days will comprise the following events:

  • January 6 — 7 p.m. check in for the hunt;
  • January 7 — turn in game from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.;
  • January 8 — hunter education class concurrent with hunts (tentative); and
  • January 9 — 12 p.m. final turn in of game, family activities and seminars, and a banquet, auction, and raffle from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Hunt For Hunger will provide wild game for the Salvation Army's various food assistance programs. In the past, money generated from the sale of furs has been given to Camp Alexander to help purchase equipment for their youth outdoor skills program. Proceeds from the $50 entry fee benefits the Beau Arndt “Love of the Outdoors” Scholarship at Emporia State University. In addition to the $50 entry fee, participants must donate 10 canned goods. Scholarships for the tournament are available for youth and anyone with a hardship.
